The Changes of the Landscape Depending on the Distance From the CBD

As the distance from the CBD increases, the landscape becomes more agricultural. Less restaurants and small shops appear, however more open fields and agricultural machinery start to show up. On the other hand, the closer you are to the Central Business District, or downtown, the landscape becomes more urban, which means more cars, the buildings are clustered together, many shops, cafes and restaurants start to appear. The same pattern is seen in the city of Salzburg.

For our expedition, we had to get on the bus and travel through the city, crossing the the central business district. We traveled from Marienbad all the way to Bergheim. Throughout the trip, significant but gradual changes could be noticed.

This picture was taken not very far away from the school, on Moosstrasse. It clearly shows an open field used for agriculture. The buildings are also very sparsely distributed.

As we go farther towards the center, hospitals, small shops, and restaurants start to appear. Buildings and other structures are now closer to each other, but are still not clustered together.

The university is also located not in the center itself, but in a very close proximity to it.

As we enter the downtown area, the landscape becomes very different. There are many shops, restaurants, cafes. It becomes somewhat similar to other central business districts in other countries or cities because the area is very touristic and there are common places like Billa, Starbucks, McDonald's, etc. The buildings and structures are clustered together and there is not much space between them.

As we travel further, now exiting the "main area" - downtown- we start to see other structures and features. For example, on the way to Bergheim you pass the railroads that take their beginning at the main station, which is still in the city.

Next large department stores and warehouses began to appear.

Finally, as we get closer to our destination, the landscape changes back to very rural. Again, a lot of open fields, farms, animals, tractors, etc. The houses are far away from each other and there are no touristic places that could be seen in the center.
